Standard Work Training — 45-minute Module & Competency Checklist
Overview
This 45-minute training module teaches frontline operators how to follow, update, and improve standard work so that the documented method becomes the default way of working. The module combines a short demo, a hands-on observation-and-edit exercise, a brief knowledge check, and an interactive competency sign-off to capture training completion and evidence.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the purpose of standard work and its role in safety, quality, and stability.
- Demonstrate how to follow standard work exactly as written.
- Perform a focused observation to identify deviations or improvement ideas.
- Propose and document a safe, tested change using the standard work change process.
- Complete the competency checklist and receive trainer sign-off.
Materials
- Printed or digital standard work document for the task
- Observation worksheet or tablet (supplied)
- Timer or clock
- Red/green pens or stickers for marking deviations
- Blank change suggestion form
- Whiteboard or flip chart for debrief
Suggested Timeline (45 minutes)
- Welcome, purpose, and objectives — 5 minutes
- Trainer demonstration and walkthrough of the standard work — 8 minutes
- Guided practice: observation and edit exercise (pairs) — 15 minutes
- Knowledge check (short quiz) — 7 minutes
- Debrief, trainer assessment, and competency sign-off — 5 minutes
Trainer Notes
Keep the session practical and focused. Use real standard work that the trainee will use the same day. During practice, watch for specific behaviors (use of check steps, sequence adherence, cleaning and tools placement, documentation). Encourage concise, evidence-based change suggestions. If a learner does not demonstrate key behaviors during practice, plan a short follow-up observation rather than signing off immediately.
