Trend Watch Brief & Capability Hypothesis Template
A concise, structured brief to capture a trend signal, summarize evidence, and convert the observation into a small, measurable experiment and a capability hypothesis with clear success criteria, rollback plans, governance, and next steps.
Trend Watch Brief — Compact Template
Use this brief to capture an observed trend, summarize the evidence, and turn the observation into a focused, low-risk experiment and capability hypothesis. Keep entries concise: this document should help teams decide whether to run a small test, pause to gather more evidence, or drop the idea.
How to use
Fill each field with a short, specific response. When possible attach links or references to evidence. Aim for experiments that can run in days or weeks, cost little, and produce measurable outcomes. Preserve governance metadata so experiments can be tracked and rolled back if needed.
Trend Snapshot
Trend name/title: (one-line label)
Observed signal: (brief description of what you noticed — customer behavior, technology improvement, regulatory shift, competitor move, market metric)
When observed / cadence: (date, frequency, or timeframe)
Evidence & Confidence
- Primary evidence: (links, metrics, transcripts, vendor claims — cite sources)
- Secondary corroboration: (other teams, customers, third-party reports)
- Confidence level: (Low / Medium / High) — explain briefly why
- Key assumptions: (what must be true for the trend to matter?)
Customer / User Impact
Who is affected and how? (roles, segments, workflows, pain reduced or value created)
Capability Hypothesis
State a short testable hypothesis linking the trend to a capability your organization could build or adapt.
Hypothesis (If/Then): If we [apply X capability / change Y process / offer Z], then [measurable outcome] will improve by [target amount] within [timeframe].
Experiment Design — Small, Measurable, Timeboxed
- Objective: (one-sentence experiment goal tied to the hypothesis)
- Primary metric(s): (what you will measure — be specific: metric name, baseline, target)
- Minimum viable experiment: (describe the smallest feasible test to validate the hypothesis)
- Duration: (days or weeks)
- Sample / scope: (who/what will be included; pilot site; percent of traffic/users)
- Resources required: (people, tools, budget estimate)
Risk Management & Rollback
- Top risks: (two or three worst outcomes)
- Rollback criteria & plan: (clear triggers to stop and steps to revert)
- Compliance / privacy / safety notes: (any constraints to check before running)
Governance & Stakeholders
Experiment owner: (name / role)
Primary stakeholders / approvers: (names or roles)
Review cadence: (how often results are reviewed and by whom)
Success Criteria & Decision Rules
Define explicit thresholds for: continue / iterate / scale / stop. Example: "If conversion lifts ≥ 8% vs baseline with no quality complaints in 4 weeks → scale to next site; if lift < 2% → stop; if quality complaints arise → rollback immediately."
Next Steps & Timeline
- Approve experiment & allocate resources (date)
- Prepare test assets and measurement plan (date)
- Run pilot (date range)
- Review results and decide (date)
Notes & References
Attach links to data extracts, vendor docs, research notes, customer interviews, and relevant backlog items. Keep notes factual and timestamped.
Example (short)
Trend: Adoption of low-code automations by frontline teams
Evidence: Two pilot sites automated a routine approval and reduced cycle time 40% in 6 weeks; vendor reports show 20% annual growth in low-code tool usage in our sector.
Hypothesis: If we provide a curated low-code template and coach to two pilot teams, then approval cycle time will fall by ≥30% in 8 weeks.
Experiment: Deploy template to 2 teams, measure cycle time baseline vs pilot, review weekly. Rollback by disabling template and restoring previous workflow if quality issues appear.
Quick Checklist to Avoid Mal Hungers
- Is there concrete evidence, not just hype? (yes / no)
- Is the experiment small, timeboxed, and reversible? (yes / no)
- Are success metrics and rollback rules explicit? (yes / no)
- Is a clear owner and reviewer assigned? (yes / no)
Template fields for reuse
Teams may copy this template into a ticket, experiment log, or an interactive form. Store all completed briefs in a searchable collection so similar signals and experiments can be compared over time.
