Trends Watch Brief Template

A short, structured brief you can fill and save to evaluate an emerging consumer, supply, or technology trend. The form helps you capture the trend, likely timing, operational impacts, early indicators, quick pilot ideas with success criteria, owner, estimated cost/time, monitoring cadence, and a clear recommendation (monitor, pilot, no action, scale).

Trends Watch Brief

Use this brief to turn a buzzworthy trend into a practical, testable opportunity. Capture the core insight, assess operational impact, identify early indicators and data sources, sketch quick pilots with success criteria, and assign an owner who will watch and act.

Give the trend a short, clear name (e.g., 'Plant-based fried chicken experiments', 'AI order-aggregation for delivery').
A 1–2 sentence summary of what the trend is and why it matters.
Describe the trend in more detail and list primary sources or signals (articles, supplier notes, vendor demos, customer requests, pilot results).
How soon does this matter operationally?
Select areas likely affected.
Briefly explain the expected specific impacts on menu items, cost structure, labor skills or volumes, and any cross-functional implications.
List measurable signals that would show the trend is gaining or failing (search volume, supplier lead times, price movements, customer requests, pilot metrics).
Where will you watch for indicators? (POS categories, inventory usage, supplier notices, customer feedback channels, industry reports, social listening).
Describe small, low-cost pilots to test the trend's operational relevance (what to test, where, how long, expected sample size). Keep pilots short and measurable.
Define 2–4 concrete metrics that would make a pilot successful (e.g., 15% incremental sales, <5% ticket time increase, food cost <X%, positive NPS change).
Rough one-time or monthly cost estimate for the pilot.
How many weeks to implement and gather meaningful results.
Who on the team will be responsible for watching indicators and running the pilot? Include role/title.
How often should the owner review indicators?
Based on current evidence, what's the recommended next action?
Short justification for the chosen recommendation, including key risks and uncertainties.
Concrete next actions, owners, and target dates (e.g., schedule pilot, collect baseline data, notify suppliers).
