Contribution Margin per Seat & Cover Calculator (Interactive)
Interactive tool to capture average check, variable cost percentage, fixed cost allocation per seat, and covers-per-seat so teams can test scenarios and understand how check size and seat utilization drive contribution margin per cover and per seat.
Contribution Margin per Seat & Cover Calculator
What this tool helps you discover
Use this calculator to compare how average check size and seat utilization (covers per seat) affect the contribution margin you generate per cover and per seat. That helps you see whether pushing more covers, growing check size, or reducing variable costs will better protect profit after fixed costs are allocated.
Core formulas (use these with the inputs you save)
- Contribution margin per cover (before fixed allocation) = average_check × (1 - variable_cost_pct / 100)
- Contribution margin per seat (before fixed allocation) = contribution_margin_per_cover × covers_per_seat
- Contribution margin per seat (after fixed allocation) = contribution_margin_per_seat_before_fixed - fixed_cost_allocation_per_seat
- Alternative view: fixed cost per cover = fixed_cost_allocation_per_seat ÷ covers_per_seat, so contribution margin per cover (after fixed) = contribution_margin_per_cover - fixed_cost_per_cover
Quick example
Inputs: average check = 25.00, variable cost = 35%, covers per seat = 2.0, fixed allocation per seat = 20.00 (period must match your covers_per_seat period, e.g., per day).
- Contribution per cover = 25.00 × (1 - 0.35) = 16.25
- Contribution per seat before fixed = 16.25 × 2.0 = 32.50
- Contribution per seat after fixed = 32.50 - 20.00 = 12.50
- Fixed per cover = 20.00 ÷ 2.0 = 10.00 → Contribution per cover after fixed = 16.25 - 10.00 = 6.25
How to use
1) Enter your current operating assumptions and save them. 2) Enter one or two alternate scenarios (higher/lower check or covers) to see how sensitive margin is to those changes. 3) Compare the per-cover and per-seat results to determine whether you should prioritize raising check, reducing variable costs, or increasing covers per seat.
Notes on periods and consistency
Make sure your covers_per_seat and fixed_cost_allocation_per_seat refer to the same period (per service, per day, per week, or per month). Mismatched periods cause misleading results.
