Microlearning Modules & Skills Badging Templates

Ready-to-use 5–7 minute micro-module outlines, assessment quizzes, observational checklists, and badge templates for core frontline hospitality competencies (greeting, order accuracy, plating checks, sanitation basics and manager checks). Includes launch checklist, KPI suggestions, and guidance for tailoring and integrating interactive quizzes and badge tracking.

Purpose

This template collection helps managers and learning leads deploy short, focused microlearning for frontline roles and make on‑the‑job competence trackable with simple skills badges. Use these modules to ramp new hires faster, reduce variation across shifts, and make everyday coaching measurable.

How to use this collection

  1. Pick the micro-modules you need for a role or shift (starter set below).
  2. Customize the script, examples, and terminology to match your menu and service style.
  3. Run the short knowledge check (quiz) and conduct an on‑floor observation within the first three shifts.
  4. Award a badge when competency criteria are met. Reassess periodically and after menu or process changes.

Starter micro-modules (5–7 minutes each)

Each module below includes: Learning outcome, quick instructor script, two micro-practice prompts, a short quiz (3‑5 questions), and an observational checklist for a manager or peer coach.

1. Greeting & First Impressions

Learning outcome: Deliver a friendly, consistent greeting that sets the guest expectation and speeds seating/ordering.

Script & prompts: Example greeting lines, how to read the floor, what to do when a guest looks rushed. Practice: roleplay greeting a party of 2 and a solo guest with different tempos.

Mini-quiz (sample):

  • Q1: What are two things a good greeting should accomplish? (A: Welcome guest, set timing/expectation)
  • Q2: When a guest is clearly in a hurry, what adjustment do you make? (A: Offer expedited options / explain wait times)

Observation checklist (3 items): Eye contact & smile; appropriate timing (within X seconds); clear next-step (seat/offer menu/take order).

2. Order Accuracy

Learning outcome: Reduce mistakes by using checks, repeating orders, and clarifying modifiers.

Script & prompts: Teach readback technique, how to confirm allergies, and what to do for custom requests. Practice: take a three‑item order with modifiers and read it back.

Mini-quiz (sample):

  • Q1: What phrase do you use to confirm a modifier? (A: "So that's X with Y, correct?")
  • Q2: If a ticket contains an allergen, what is the immediate step? (A: Mark ticket and notify kitchen/front‑line lead)

Observation checklist: Correct readback; tickets match guest request; timely flagging of allergens or special prep.

3. Plating & Quality Check

Learning outcome: Ensure each plate meets portion, garnish, and temperature standards before leaving the pass.

Script & prompts: Show a correct plate, common errors, and a 30‑second warm/hot check routine. Practice: inspect two plates and decide if they pass.

Mini-quiz (sample):

  • Q1: Name two indicators a plate fails the pass (A: wrong portion, cold temperature, missing garnish).

Observation checklist: Portion, presentation, temperature, correct accompaniment.

4. Sanitation Basics

Learning outcome: Demonstrate critical sanitation moments: handwashing, cleaning station between tasks, safe food handling.

Script & prompts: Show handwashing steps, explain when to change gloves, and sanitizing frequency for surfaces. Practice: perform a handwash and a surface sanitizing routine.

Mini-quiz (sample):

  • Q1: How long should you scrub hands? (A: At least 20 seconds)
  • Q2: When must you change gloves? (A: After handling raw food, after touching face, before touching ready-to-eat items)

Observation checklist: Proper handwash technique; glove changes at required moments; surface sanitation completed and logged.

5. Manager Quick‑Check: Shift Readiness (Manager module)

Learning outcome: Managers can run a 3‑minute pre‑shift check that covers service flow, staffing, and critical food safety points.

Checklist: Stations staffed; daily specials and allergens communicated; ticket printer / POS / thermometers checked; opening sanitation complete.

Badge design & criteria template

Use a simple, practical badge structure. Badges are operational signals — they should be easy to earn and clearly tied to observed behaviors and a short knowledge check.

Badge template (fields)

  • Badge name: Greeting Certified
  • Icon: (svg or small png) — keep consistent visual style
  • Evidence required: Pass mini‑quiz (≥80% correct) + 2 observations within first 3 shifts with no critical misses
  • Expiry / refresh: 6 months or after major menu/process change
  • Issuer: Location manager
  • Leveling (optional): Bronze = basic; Silver = consistent under pressure; Gold = coach others

Scoring & awarding guidance: Combine knowledge checks and observed behavior. For borderline cases, require a coached improvement shift then reassess.

Sample knowledge check form (3 questions)

Use these as-is or import into your quiz tool. Combine multiple choice and short answer. Keep passing threshold simple (e.g., 80%).

  1. Which of these is the best greeting for a busy Friday at 7pm? (A: "Welcome, table for two? We’ll have a menu and seat you now.")
  2. True/False: You should always read back modifiers for accuracy. (A: True)
  3. Short answer: List three items you check before sending a plate out. (A: portion, temperature, garnish)

Implementation checklist

  • Customize language and examples to your menu and tempo.
  • Decide delivery method: short video, in‑person demo, or printable script.
  • Assign coaches and set observation windows (e.g., within first 3 shifts).
  • Import quizzes into your LMS or use the platform's interactive forms to capture results.
  • Record badge awards in the staff profile and display visible recognition.

Suggested KPIs & measurement

  • Time to competency: average shifts to badge award.
  • First 2‑week order accuracy rate.
  • Guest complaint rate tied to training topics (greeting, order errors, plating).
  • Badge completion % by role and by hire cohort.

Tailoring guidance & common adaptations

Short recommendations to adapt to different contexts:

  • High-volume quick service: focus on speed+accuracy modules and fast readback practice.
  • Fine dining: extend plating module to include temperature windows and garnish precision.
  • Catering/banquets: add large-order flow and tray service micro-modules.

Files & templates included

  • Printable micro-module scripts (editable)
  • Observation checklist PDF (manager)
  • Quiz CSV import template
  • Badge metadata JSON template (name, criteria, evidence, expiry)

Next steps and recommended experiment

Run a pilot on one location for 4 weeks with three modules. Track time-to-competency and order accuracy before and after. Use findings to refine quizzes, observation criteria, and badge thresholds.

Accessibility & fairness notes

Allow accommodations (language support, extra practice) and avoid making badges the only route to role tasks. Use badges to inform coaching, not to exclude staff from development opportunities.
