Microlearning Module Template & Badging Checklist

A practical, ready-to-use template for 3–6 minute microlearning lessons that combine a clear objective, 2–3 focused micro-tips, a two-question competency check, a short on-shift practice task, and an observable pass/fail badging rubric. Includes examples, implementation checklist, metadata fields, and measurement suggestions so frontline teams can run, track, and iterate fast.

Overview

Use this template to create focused 3–6 minute microlearning modules that fit busy frontline shifts. Each module is designed to produce observable behavior change quickly and allow managers to verify competency with minimal disruption.

When to use a microlearning module

  • Refresher on a single skill (e.g., proper portioning, allergen handling)
  • Quick procedure updates (e.g., new POS step, revised sanitation step)
  • On-shift practice prompts to reduce mistakes and remakes
  • Short competency checks after shadowing or before a critical task

Module structure (use as a copyable template)

  1. Title — short, role-specific (e.g., "Portioning Chicken: 90s Check").
  2. Audience — role(s) and minimum prerequisites (if any).
  3. Duration — target 3–6 minutes total (state exact minutes).
  4. Learning objective — one clear, observable outcome. (Write as: "After this module, the team member will be able to ...")
  5. Micro-tips — 2–3 focused, actionable tips. Each tip should be a single short sentence and tied to the objective.
  6. Competency check (2 questions) — two quick items that test understanding. Use one knowledge question (multiple choice or yes/no) and one scenario or behavior question (what would you do?).
  7. On-shift practice task — a short task to perform during the next shift (1–5 minutes) with instructions on where and when to do it.
  8. Badging / pass criteria — observable behaviors that constitute Pass vs Fail; include who verifies and when.
  9. Manager notes — quick coaching points, common errors, and suggested feedback language.
  10. Tags / metadata — skill, location, role, estimated time, priority, related SOP, version/date, and author.

Badging rubric (pass / fail)

Define a small number of observable behaviors (2–4). A badge is earned when all pass behaviors are observed during the practice task or within the next N shifts. Example rubric:

  • Pass behaviors — Clearly scoops 4 oz to the portion line; confirms plate matches POS ticket; uses the correct garnish, and places completed plates in the pickup area within 90 seconds.
  • Fail behaviors — Portion exceeds tolerance, missing required garnish, or fails to ring/modifier checks.
  • Verifier — Shift lead or trainer observes and signs off within the same shift.
  • Recheck frequency — If failed, repeat practice the same shift or within next 3 shifts; if repeated failures, escalate to manager-led coaching.

Sample micro-modules

1) Safe Allergen Handling (3 minutes)

Objective: After this module, the team member will name the two top allergens in the dish and demonstrate separate preparation using a dedicated station or clean surface.

  • Tips: 1) Read the ticket for allergen notes. 2) Use labeled containers. 3) Confirm with the line cook before cooking.
  • Quiz: Q1 true/false: Cross-contact happens only when food touches another ingredient. Q2 scenario: What do you do if a customer reports an allergy mid-service?
  • Practice: Prepare one allergen-free dish during a controlled ticket with the shift lead observing.
  • Badge: Pass = no cross-contact observed + reports correct ingredients to guest.

2) Portion Consistency Check (4 minutes)

Objective: Deliver plates within ±10% of target portion size for the featured protein.

  • Tips: 1) Use the same spoon/scoop. 2) Level off at the measuring mark. 3) Recheck visually against the standard plate.
  • Quiz: Q1: What is the target portion in ounces? Q2: If a portion is over, what corrective step do you take?
  • Practice: During service, prepare and present two portions for manager confirmation.
  • Badge: Pass = both observed portions within tolerance.

3) POS Modifier Accuracy (3 minutes)

Objective: Correctly enter and verify modifiers for special requests 100% of the time during the checked shift period.

  • Tips: 1) Read the whole ticket. 2) Confirm verbally with guest if unclear. 3) Repeat modifier back when ringing.
  • Practice: Ring 3 tickets with modifiers under observation.
  • Badge: Pass = zero missed modifiers on observed tickets.

Production & delivery checklist

  • Create a short script or slide with the objective and 2–3 tips (30–90 seconds).
  • Record or produce a single 1–3 minute video or voiceover demonstrating the behavior where appropriate.
  • Write two quick competency check questions and define correct answers and acceptable responses for scenario questions.
  • Define the practice task and verifier (who will observe) and when it must be completed.
  • Attach the badging rubric and add metadata (role, time, version).
  • Publish to the team channel and notify the verifier(s) with a one-line instruction: "Observe X during your next shift and complete badge check."

Measurement & iteration

  • Track completion and badge outcomes (Pass/Fail) for each learner; measure time-to-pass across hires.
  • Collect quick feedback from verifiers: Was the practice task realistic? Did the rubric match on-shift reality?
  • After 10–20 completions, revisit tips and rubric: tighten or relax thresholds based on common errors and guest impact.

Manager notes & coaching language

Provide two or three short coaching prompts that verifiers can use when giving feedback. Example: "Nice job keeping the portion consistent — next time try angling the scoop this way to speed up." Keep feedback specific and action-oriented.

Accessibility, learning design & frontline tips

  • Keep language plain, use short sentences, and include a short demonstration whenever possible.
  • Prefer visual cues and one short video clip over long text. Use captions for noisy kitchens.
  • Make the practice task realistic and brief — it must be achievable during a busy shift.

Suggested metadata fields for the platform

  • Title, Audience, Role, Duration (min), Objective, Tags/Skill(s), SOP link, Verifier role, Badge criteria, Version, Author, Publish date.

Next steps for teams

Start with 3 pilot modules tied to high-impact errors (e.g., portioning, allergens, POS). Use the badge outcomes and verifier notes to iterate. Package successful modules into a short frontline onboarding bundle and add to your team domain so locations can adopt and tailor them.
