Measure What Matters: A simple way to turn metrics into learning and action
Most metric reviews become busywork because they stop at numbers. A KPI huddle that truly helps your team focuses on three things: clear, leading indicators; explicit learning questions; and short experiments or decisions that follow from the data. When your meetings create experiments and learning, the metrics stop being targets and start being tools.
Quick start — get value in one meeting
- Pick 3–5 indicators that are timely and predictive of outcomes you care about (leading where possible).
- For each indicator, write one learning question (what would you learn if this moves up or down?).
- Agree 1–2 small experiments or decisions to try before the next huddle, assign owners, and set a date to review.
This resource helps you choose indicators, run the meeting, capture decisions, and track experiments so measurement leads to improvement — not dashboards, busywork, or blame.
Who this helps: teams, small businesses, service organizations, operations and product teams, managers who want a lightweight, repeatable rhythm for learning from data.
How to use the rest of this resource: start with the operational guide (how to run the huddle), use the interactive huddle log to record meetings and experiments, keep the checklist nearby to make the practice reliable, and consult the indicator reference when selecting measures.
