Visual Controls Quick Reference (Checklist)
Use this one-page checklist when you design or audit visual controls at the point of work.
- Is the visual placed where the decision is made or where the action occurs?
- Is the message clear in under 3 seconds (large type, simple words)?
- Does each color or signal have one unambiguous meaning?
- Does the visual prompt a specific next action (e.g., "Stop and call lead" rather than just "Problem")?
- Is ownership assigned for updates and weekly checks?
- Are critical tools and supplies stored in labeled locations or shadow boards?
- Are status displays updated at a predictable cadence (shift change, end of batch)?
- Is there a simple replacement plan for worn or damaged signs and boards?
- Do visuals align with the standard work documents (same terms, same steps)?
- Is there a short test: observe 5 workers—do at least 4 respond as the visual intends?
