Dashboard Health & Pre-Launch Checklist

Run this checklist before you publish or promote a dashboard. Aim for green on the first 8 items; address the others in follow-ups.

  1. Decision clarity: Each top-level panel answers a specific decision or question.
  2. Audience defined: Primary viewers and viewing rhythm are documented.
  3. Metric definitions: Every visible metric has a one-line definition and owner.
  4. Signal-to-noise: Fewer than 7 key signals on the decision surface (3–5 preferred).
  5. Visual match: Each chart type fits the question (trend, comparison, distribution).
  6. Update cadence: Data latency and refresh schedule match user needs and are visible.
  7. Action guidance: For each threshold, a recommended next step and owner are listed.
  8. Access & permissions: Viewers can access needed drilldowns without special requests.
  9. Alert rules: Alerts are configured only where they meaningfully change response.
  10. Performance: Dashboard loads within acceptable time for the intended environment.
  11. Data quality checks: Known data issues are documented and visible to users.
  12. Adoption plan: Distribution channel, meeting integration, and owner are identified.
  13. Pilot feedback: At least two pilot users have reviewed and approved the decision flow.
  14. Governance: A cadence for review and retirement is scheduled (owner and frequency).
