Facilitator's Quick Play — When meetings go off track
Short scripts and simple moves to regain control while keeping psychological safety intact.
1. Dominant speaker
Move: Acknowledge and re-balance.
Script: "Thanks — that's helpful. I want to hear from others too. Let's go to Maya for a different perspective, and we'll come back if time allows."
2. Conversation goes off-topic
Move: Park and defer.
Script: "That's important but off our stated purpose. Does someone want to own a short follow-up? We'll park this under 'Follow-up: X' and continue with the decision at hand."
3. Heated disagreement
Move: Slow the conversation, surface evidence, restate the decision protocol.
Script: "Let's pause. Can each side state the proposal, the main concern, and one piece of evidence that matters? We'll then choose a decision method to move forward."
4. Silent meeting / few contributors
Move: Invite specific input and create low-risk prompts.
Script: "I'd like to hear from three people who haven't spoken yet. Anna, can you share one risk you see? Marco, what's one benefit you expect?"
5. Technical or logistics failure
Move: Pause, decide whether to continue asynchronously, and set an immediate owner.
Script: "We're having tech issues. Let's reconvene at X or continue via shared doc—Jamal, can you capture the current state and next steps?"
Practice these lines out loud once or twice with your team—having a shared language reduces friction and preserves trust when conflicts arise.
